Arts Administration, B.A.

About the Major


The Arts Administration major prepares students for careers in the vibrant fields of arts management and leadership. Providing a unique integration of arts, communications, and business courses, this major equips students with the foundational expertise to succeed in careers in various arts organizations, including museums, theaters, dance companies, galleries, archives, and other cultural institutions. Proximity to Philadelphia’s world-class arts community allows students to gain professional experience while working on their degree.

Requirements


  • 66-68 credits, plus electives and AUC requirements to total 120 credits.
  • Students are encouraged to double major in this and another major.

Foundations in Writing/Quantiative Reasoning (8 Credits)


  • EN 218 Business Writing  (4 Credits) (Prerequisite: EN101)*
    • This course currently carries a research writing designation, but if students want to take another research writing course, EN218 can satisfy a writing requirement.
  • MA 141 Elementary Statistics  (4 Credits) (Prerequisite: MA095 or placement exam)

Research Writing (4 Credits)


Students will take one of the following research writing designated classes:

Capstone (4 Credits)


Through careful advising, students may elect to do Senior thesis in FA, AH, TH, BA, or CM. Note: if a student chooses to complete the BA capstone, they will have to declare their major early enough in their college career to complete the following prerequisite courses EN218, BA260, BA340, BA367 and BA380. Since SelfService cannot check prerequisites, this program will provide internal degree audit forms (similar to those used in Art and Design) in order to keep track of prerequisite courses.

Internship/Apprenticeship (4-8 Credits)


Students will take 1-2 classes that accomplish the following objectives related to the arts (Program goal 4): practical experience, including internships and apprenticeships, to give students exposure to the challenges and opportunities of managing arts and culture organizations. This hands-on experience is crucial for building skills and networking within various arts industries:

Arts (16 Credits)


Students will take 4 classes from a list of courses that accomplish the following objectives related to the arts (Program goals 2 and 3): to give students exposure to the types of challenges and opportunities that leaders of arts and culture organizations face:

Business (16 Credits)


Students will take 4 classes to accomplish the following objectives related to arts administration and management (Program goals 2, 3 and 5): 1) to understand the principles and practices of arts administration and management; and 2) to learn about arts management practices, including budgeting, fundraising, marketing, strategic planning, legal, ethical, and financial aspects specific to arts organization administration.

Leadership/Management (8 Credits)


Students will take 2 classes that accomplish the following objectives related to to apply their arts and business knowledge (Program goals 1, 2, and 3: 1) to apply what they have learned to the world outside the classroom and the campus; 2) to explore personal and professional development, including refining leadership skills to become an effective and influential leader; 3) to gain the knowledge and competencies necessary for managerial roles, overseeing teams, projects, or departments effectively.

Note: Courses taken in Arts, Business, and Leadership/Management should total 40 credits.

Electives (12-16 Credits)


Students will take 3-4 electives based on their area of interest, to become skilled at promoting arts sustainability and advocacy, including staying current with trends and emerging technologies that impact arts administration. Reminder: if a student chooses to complete the BA capstone, they will have to declare their major early enough in their college career to complete the following prerequisite courses EN218, BA260, BA340, BA367 and BA380.
