About the Program

The U.S. population is more diverse than ever, and demand for bilingual healthcare workers is on the rise. Latinos and Hispanics are a dynamic and diverse ethnic group within the United States, as well as one of the fastest growing minorities in this country (62.1 million according to the 2020 census). There is an increasing need for future and current medical professionals to be linguistically and culturally equipped to care for and work with Latino and Hispanic patients. The Medical Spanish Certificate works to close communication gaps between Spanish-speaking patients and healthcare professionals. The Medical Spanish Certificate program emphasizes reading, conversation, and writing medical terminology in Spanish; and introduces students to socio-cultural issues specific to Hispanics and Latino communities. The Certificate allows students to gain a competitive edge in the healthcare field and to build trust with Spanish-speaking patients.
