Theater Arts, Minor

About the Minor


The minor in Theater Arts is designed for students who want to supplement their chosen major with courses in the Theater Arts. It allows students from other disciplines to pursue their passions, deepen their creative skills, and be introduced to new techniques involved with bringing stories to life.

Pathways


Students pursuing a minor in Theatre Arts will be advised toward one of the pathways listed below, which outline foundational courses in various areas of interest (Note: the name of a student’s chosen pathway will not appear on a student’s transcript.) Each pathway’s requirements, plus electives, total 20 credits: 

 

Technical Theatre/Production Pathway


This course of study will engage students with an interest in theatrical design and technical aspects of theatre. Learn and participate in behind-the-scenes work in a hands-on way. 

 

  • TH190/190L: Introduction to Backstage (with lab) (2)
     

At least one course in theatrical design, choose from: 

  • TH261: Stage Design (4)
  • TH262: Costume Design (4)
  • TH267: Lighting Design (4)

 

  • TH264: Stage Management (4)

 

Theatre Arts/Cognate electives - chosen in consultation with advisor (10 credits)

Potential cognates include Fine Arts and Communications courses. 

 

Musical Theatre Pathway


Foundational courses in acting, dance, and musical performance provide students training in the art of music theater. 

  • TH101: The Actor’s Instrument (3)

  • TH150: Acting 1: Foundations (4)

  • TH228: Dance Techniques for Musical Theater 1 (3)

  • TH293: Acting a Song (4)

 

Theater Arts/cognate electives - chosen in consultation with advisor (6 credits)

Acting/Movement Pathway


This course of study helps students build the skills an actor needs for their craft: the voice, the body, the mind, and the heart. 

  • TH101: The Actor’s Instrument (3)

  • TH150: Acting 1: Foundations (4)

  • TH241: Acting 2: Scene Study (4)

  • TH160: Foundations of Stage Movement (3)

 

Theater Arts/cognate electives - chosen in consultation with advisor (4 credits)

Playwriting/Storytelling Pathway


This course of study teaches students about how dramatic stories impact audiences, and teaches skills for creating characters and building narratives in various media and contexts.
