PAS 240 African Disaporic Images in the Media

(4 Credits)
This course will offer a critical examination of the representations of African and African-descended peoples in television, film, and other forms of media across time including but not limited to video games, social media, and online streaming platforms. Examining these representations, as they are constructed within and outside of the Diaspora, will enable us to trace not only the dynamic forces that shape our understandings of race, culture, and identity but also the impact of mass media and popular culture in elevating Black voices or advancing myths, misconceptions, and tall tales about African and African-American communities at large. This course will include examination of media, material culture, and phenomena such as technoracism while introducing students to Africana research methods central to studying diasporic experiences past and present.
