AH 315 Art in the Crossfire: Protecting and Preserving Threatened Cultural Heritage 4 credits Students in this course will examine the systematic and deliberate destruction and/ or theft, looting, and illicit trafficking of cultural heritage around the world. Case studies such as the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, the obliteration of the site of Nimrud in Iraq, or the damaged shrines in Mali demonstrate that such actions were specifically designed to eradicate the cultural identity of an individual/ and or community. Students will have the chance to hear first-person accounts from experts who worked in affected areas. Further, students will discuss ways to preserve and protect threatened cultural heritage from future conflicts and other threats.
