HS 266 The Human in Humanitarianism 4 Credits IS266 + PS266
Humanitarianism is equated with promoting human welfare and well-being. In the face of increases in political violence, genocide, natural disasters, and climate related emergencies, humanitarianism is more important than ever; however, humanitarian institutions often fail in their mission to care for human beings. This course returns human beings to the center of humanitarianism by focusing on people’s experiences and encounters with these institutions. Students will read anthropological and historical accounts alongside works of fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and film to learn how these institutions function, why they were created, and what the human experience with these institutions is. Students will learn to conduct research using historical sources and organizational documents and reports. They will have the opportunity to write in both academic and creative forms. We will also participate in a refugee camp simulation.
