HSC 240 Historical and Professional Understandings of Health Sciences 4 Credits The American healthcare system evolved from home remedies conducted by members of the community to large institutions under the authority of physicians and insurance companies. In this course, students will learn how U.S. healthcare and long-term care systems (both formal and informal) developed between the nineteenth century and today, who the providers are that operate within the healthcare system, and gain an understanding of the broader health ecosystem. A health ecosystem refers to all that which directly or indirectly shapes health, wellness, and functioning. We will discuss the professional standards of a range of healthcare providers from Emergency Medical Technicians to Physicians to Public Health as well as a background on governing bodies in healthcare, such as the World Health Organization and Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Thus, this course will offer a basis for the development of students’ professional and career plans and allow them to envision the future of population health and, importantly, their role within it. Students enrolled in this course will primarily be in the health sciences program in either the B.A., B.S., or minor pathways, however, the course will be open for students interested in health sciences and looking to obtain AUC credits.
