SO 258 Legal and Social Control over Gender and Sexuality

(4 credits)
Are all genders equal under the law? Is law an effective tool for social change? This course is an Introduction to the intersection of gender, sexuality and the law in a contemporary context. We will examine how the law reflects and creates distinctions on the basis of race, gender, and sexuality and how such distinctions contribute to social inequalities. Incorporating an intersectional lens grounded in anti-racist feminist pedagogy, we will analyze reproductive rights, marriage rights, sex work, anti-discrimination law, the #metoo movement, transgender rights, and other social justice issues. We will also explore how feminist and queer activists have resisted legally produced inequalities and whether their efforts have created enduring social change.
