HS 115 Race, Gender, and Class in Early American History


(4 credits)
This course examines the ideas, forces, events, and personalities that led to the dramatic transformation of the United States from the first colonies through the Civil War. This course explores issues related to the political, economic, and social development of the United States through the mid-19th century. The course addresses not only the historical paragons but also questions of interpretation. Special attention will be paid to competing notions, definitions, and laws regarding citizenship and exclusion based upon race, gender, and class.
