FR 312 French Caribbean Literature and Culture (4 Credits) This is an undergraduate course which examines the culture and literature of the French Caribbean as manifested in three different regions (Haiti, Martinique, and Guadeloupe). It interrogates and analyzes the term “Caribbean” from geographical, historical, socio-economic, colonial/postcolonial perspectives. We read novels, poems, and essays, and watch films and documentaries, analyzing them within specific cultural, political, critical, and social contexts. We consider and discuss such themes and questions as colonization, decolonization, independence, post-colonialism, the difficulty of writing in the colonizer’s language, the problems of cultural identity, ethnic/racial/religious diversity, education systems, im/migration, climate change, and globalization. Since telling stories is crucial in Caribbean culture and identity, we will also focus on the importance of orality and examine the carnival traditions in these three regions.
Prerequisite: FR202 or equivalent
