US 209 Women Crossing Boundaries

For generations, female artists have managed to cross intellectual, creative and social boundaries despite the expectations and restrictions prescribed by others. Some intentionally challenged the limits placed upon them while others just followed where their passionate inquiry led. In this University Seminar, students will study the lives, contexts and works of four women-makers who have crossed boundaries of geography, culture, gender or discipline. By following the methods and mediums of these four makers, students will create work that explores and facilitates their own boundary crossings.

Lectures, discussions, and creative labs will be how we spend our in-person class times together. Assignments will involve reading and research, creative projects, and self-assessment writing.
