HS 116 Race, Class, & Gender in Modern America (4 credits) This course examines the ideas, forces, events, and personalities that led to the dramatic transformation of the United States from the Reconstruction through the present. This course explores issues related to the political, economic, and social development of the United States during the late nineteenth century through the twentieth century. The course addresses not only the historical paragons but also questions of interpretation. Special attention will be paid to competing notions, definitions, and laws regarding citizenship and exclusion based upon race, gender, and class. The material will be covered both thematically and chronologically. In each session we will utilize a combination of readings, discussion, lectures, and other materials to look at the various issues/dilemmas/problems in a comprehensive manner. This includes, but is not limited to, videos, film, discussion, as well as small group work and collaborative learning. We will also interpret primary source materials so that you will learn to analyze and articulate your own arguments, ideas and opinions concerning the development of the United States.
