PY 245 Drugs and Behavior

(4 Credits)
The primary focus of this course is to delve into the fundamental causes, mechanisms, and outcomes of human substance use. We will achieve this by exploring the psychology and biology behind the behaviors that drive human instinct and survival which are ultimately exploited by addictive substances. Furthermore, we will analyze how we as a society have handled substances of abuse and ultimately the ramifications of these policies. Finally, we will discuss what can be done about substance use issues and whether or not ‘drugs’ are a permanent fixture in our lives. Serving as an introductory seminar, this course aims to spark interest in the fields of psychology, biology, and sociology; particularly as it pertains to substance use. The learning approach encompasses lectures, in-class discussions, group activities, and supplemented video materials, all designed to enhance clarity and depth of understanding.

Prerequisite: Any completed 3 or 4-credit university course in Psychology, Sociology, or Biology
