PY 209 Black Child Development


(4 Credits)
This is a seminar format course on the developmental psychology of Black American children from infancy to adolescence. The social and economic well-being of Black children and families and other background information will be reviewed as introduction to the course. We will spend the semester discussing topics such as physical development and developmental risk, language development and communication, socialization within the family, ethnicity and racial identity, self-esteem and identity development, media influences, and academic achievement. We will conclude the course by discussing ways to affirm diversity in educational and psychological services settings. This course is designed for undergraduate students interested in psychology, education, social work, and other social sciences.

Prerequisite: Any completed 3 or 4-credit university course in Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology or Education
