Ethics, Major

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs A-Z

The Ethics major combines training in ethical reasoning with instruction about professional arenas and subject areas where ethical dilemmas arise in order to prepare students for a variety of career paths in which knowledge of applied ethics will be in demand. This interdisciplinary major is grounded in the disciplines of Philosophy and Religion as well as the interdisciplinary field of Global Studies and its component disciplines (Anthropology, Political Science and History). Students will learn to theorize and explain social and political structures that shape systems of morality and belief and will in turn understand how ethical reasoning cuts across and through these systems. These deep and nuanced understandings will equip students with the tools to apply ethical reasoning to a variety of academic and professional fields including the natural sciences, health, law, criminal justice, international relations, diplomacy and humanitarianism. This major aspires to make students future ready by equipping them with ethical tools to meet the needs of industries becoming more reliant upon AI and cognitive augmentation, in an age of political, economic, and environmental disruptions.
