Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility, Certification

Pennsylvania Administrative/Supervisory Certification

Pennsylvania Department of Education approved programs of study. Must be planned with an academic adviser to ensure completion of all program requirements. 

Candidates must meet with an academic adviser at the beginning of the final year of study to apply for the internship sequence and begin work on their professional portfolio. 

Background Course Requirements

These three courses run in 8-week, online (asynchronous) format. 

• ED 638 School Finance (3 credits)
• ED 645 Human Resources and Negotiations (3 credits)
• ED 647 Leading Schools with Data-Driven Decision Making (3 credits)

Professional Education Course Requirements

• ED 648 The Superintendency (3 credits)
• ED 720 Resolving Ethical Challenges in Educational Institutions (3 credits)
• ED 726 Organizational Theory, Change, and Sustainability (3 credits)
• ED 729 Theoretical Frameworks in Education (3 credits)
• ED 649 A,B,C Practicum: The Superintendency (1 credit each semester) NOTE: The three internship semesters must be taken consecutively; however, they may be taken in any order. The leadership portfolio must be submitted after completing the third consecutive semester.

Certification Requirements

Superintendent candidates must provide evidence of six years of satisfactory educational or student support service in private or public K-12 schools or an accredited institution of higher education of which at least 3 years must be service in supervisory or administrative positions
