US 288 Psychology of Music

We will examine central issues at the intersection of psychology and music. Students explore psychological and musical explanations of acoustics, perception, cognition, and memory; musical development and acquisition of expertise; communication of emotion and meaning; sociocultural and evolutionary psychology of music; and the neuroscience of music. Throughout the course, we will work with both musical samples (including live concerts) and scientific research studies. Guided by the principles of psychological science, students complete a capstone project involving a musical composition, performance, or experiment proposal. Prerequisite: Students should have the ability to read music, or experience playing an instrument, or MU101.
