BI 350 Climate Change Biology (4 Credits) Increasing habitat loss and climate change will likely eliminate species’ ability to adapt and survive. As sea level rises and the Arctic ice shelf shrinks and thins at an alarming rate, biotic communities composed of hundreds of species shift their boundaries to higher altitudes far from the equator. Scientists agree that climate change could drive more than a quarter of all land animals and plants into extinction. The lecture emphasizes evidence from all scientific fields needed to understand the implications of climate change on biological and ecological systems. During the lab, students will analyze species distribution data using specialized software to observe the effects of climate change on these species. Students will have the tools to critically answer the following questions at the end of the semester: What is climate change? What is responsible for climate change, and how do we know? Why does climate change matter? What can we do?
