US 285.2 Queer After Colonization: The Literature and Art of Identity Reclamation

The impact and harm done by the colonization of indigenous peoples across the world is far-reaching and particularly complex in a world focused on globalization. For
indigenous members of the LGBTQIA+ community, the imposition and aftermath of colonization can add to the social and political pressures, dangers, and complexities involved in embracing the queer aspects of their identities. In this class, we will look at a variety of books, poems, and films by queer indigenous creators from locations such as North America, Nigeria, and India in order to understand the lasting impact of the colonizing culture on queer communities at various stages of “healing” from colonization.
