About the Program

English as a Second Language (ESL) is a term for the use or study of the English language by non-native speakers in an English-speaking environment. 

Requirements

The requirements to obtain an ESL Program Specialist certification in PA:

• Hold a PA Instructional I or Instructional II certificate

• Completion of a state approved certification program

Note: To obtain an ESL (English as a Second Language) Pennsylvania Program Specialist Certificate, the candidate must receive a signed letter of ESL Training from a PDE approved program provider. This letter of completion will be issued when the candidate demonstrates that they have developed knowledge of the fundamental concepts and practice of ESL instruction and services. A valid PA Instructional I or II certification is required to be eligible for this program. 

• ED 622 ESL: Teaching Multilingual and Multicultural Literacies (3 credits)
• ED 623 ESL Multilingual and Multicultural Assessments (3 credits)
• ED 624 ESL: Understanding Language Learning (3 credits)
• ED 625 ESL: Language, Diversity and Schooling (3 credits)
• ED 629 Theory and Practice of TESOL (3 credits)

• (must be taken as the final course in the sequence)
