GC 553 Genetic Counseling Techniques II

3 credits
Students will acquire an understanding of the psychological and counseling issues underlying genetic counseling. Students will gain experience presenting genetic counseling cases orally and in writing. They will become familiar with specific counseling and psychotherapy theories and demonstrate an ability to integrate theory with a genetic counseling case. Students build skills to employ active listening and interviewing skills to identify, assess and respond to stated and emerging concerns. They will also learn how to adapt genetic counseling skills for varied service delivery models. Students will become increasingly aware of the role of their own life experiences in their work and be able to use these internal experiences effectively.
