US 285.1 Leading Men in 21st-Century Television

This course examines the portrayal of men in 2000s and late 2010s television, known to many as the Golden Age of Television or the age of Prestige Television. As history and culture traditionally have situated men as "default," far less critical interrogation exists of male representation in television and the types of stories we tell about being a man. Through analyzing television shows such as The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Better Call Saul, this course will attempt to give shape to the otherwise hazy expectations and expressions of manhood on the small screen. Furthermore, this class examines how these television renderings bleed into aspects of men’s lived individual experiences and our real-world culture.
