ID 101 Science in Civilization I In this course, students learn and apply basic concepts of physics and chemistry. The interrelationships among the fields of science are stressed, and concepts are reinforced throughout the semester. Basic problem-solving skills are emphasized in both lecture and the required laboratory component. The goal of the course is to produce scientifically literate students who are able to make informed decisions in an increasingly technologically oriented world. This is a one-semester, stand-alone course for non-science majors, including those who are preparing for the teaching profession. Topics covered include the nature of science, the scientific method, motion, gravity, energy, laws of thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, waves, light, chemical reactions and nuclear energy.
Three class hours and three laboratory hours weekly.
Prerequisite: Satisfactory performance on the mathematics placement inventory or successful completion of MA 100 is required.
